Scouting Encourages Each Boy To Do and Achieve His Best

In Cub Scouting, boys belong to a small group or “den,” and they take part in interesting and meaningful activities with their friends.  In the den, boys learn sportsmanship, good citizenship, and loyalty.  They learn how to get along with others, and how to do their best for themselves. Scouting’s Mission

The ultimate objectives of scouting are citizenship training, character development and personal fitness.  As a worldwide brotherhood, scouting is a unique organization. It is based on the principles of loving and serving God, the dignity of all human beings, and the rights of individuals.

Scouting does not emphasize winning as an end result, but rather encourages each boy to do and achieve his best.  Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are organizations that are dedicated to bringing out the best in people. No member of the scouts can grow into being the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God.  Thus, a Cub Scout learns his duty to God, country, others and self.

Scouting Activities

Cub Scout Pack 399 has raised money for the building committee of the parish through its annual bake sale, and most recently has given 50% of the proceeds from its Pancake Breakfast to the parish, and the other 50% to the American Red Cross.
The pack runs several conservation projects each year, two of which involve the grounds of St. Hubert’s parish. The scouts plant flowers, pull weeds, do general cleanup and perform other needed tasks on the grounds as requested.

Each November, the scouts collect hats, gloves, scarves, etc. for our sister parish, Our Lady of Unity. On May 11, many scouts and adult leaders spent the day going door-to-door to collect food as part of the Boy Scouts of America national food drive, “Scouting for Food.” Cub Scout Pack 399 currently is collecting craft supplies for the Peace Center, and many members donate time at other local charities.

Leadership Training

Although there are no specific criteria for becoming a “den leader,” all registered leaders must be trained.  The Cub Scouts offer leadership training several times a year at various locations throughout the Northwest suburbs.

Time Demands

As with many ministries within the parish, the time commitment varies greatly depending on the level of commitment. There are weekly meetings at the den level, there is a monthly meeting at the Pack levels (when all the dens get together), and there are specific events in which packs gather together. Meeting locations vary from the leader’s homes to the library to the Parish facilities.
