A Transitional Housing Program for Homeless Families: May 2018 Update
Family #30 Our family consists of a 23 year old mom and her two sons, ages 4 and 2. She became homeless due low income status.
Our mom’s father passed away from a heart attack. He was a veteran and was buried in a veteran’s cemetery in Springfield. She said they had a rocky relationship early on, but recently the relationship began to soften and things were getting better between them. She’s very sad that they will not be able to continue building their relationship. She also found out that her mother has a hole in her heart, so she is quite concerned about her health. Adding to the misfortunes, she recently experienced online theft from her savings account, which has set her back a bit.
On a brighter note she passed her GED exam and now has a high school diploma. She continues working at her current job. This month was tough for her, but she is determined to work toward her goals and keep a positive attitude.
Goals:
● Save up at least 3 month’s rent/saving IRS tax refund.
● Obtain her GED.
● Apply for low income housing.
● Obtain her driver’s license by paying off outstanding debts.
Family #31 This family consists of a 24 year old female and her two sons, ages 7 and 5. She became homeless due to emotional abuse from her ex and his family, with whom they lived.
Our mom is doing great! She still does not have a car, but is waiting for the repairs to be completed. Unfortunately, the repair costs will deplete her savings. She has officially accepted the Manager Position at the restaurant. Eventually she will be managing the store in Vernon Hills and is so excited about her added job responsibilities. In spite of her car problem, she is quite pleased with her raise and looking forward to her future. Her children are doing well and she has enrolled them in summer camp.
Goals:
● Save up at least 3 month’s rent/saving IRS tax refund.
● Attend work and school as scheduled.
● Apply for low income housing.
