Thomas Merton's Practice for Contemplative Prayer
“While living contemplatively begins with one’s self, it invites us to be active participants in the world around us. We are led to embrace not only our true self but to deepen our relationships with God, humanity, and all of creation.”
Thomas Merton taught his novices a way of praying that allowed them to enter the school of wisdom provided by their most personal experiences. We will explore the spiritual teachings of Thomas Merton. An emphasis will be given to Merton's insights into the contemplative path along which we learn to live in habitual awareness of God's presence. We will examine key texts from Merton's writings featuring the monk's understanding of the value of his relationships with others as guidance for creating his own destiny to love and seek God. Our hope is that this evening will lead us in a new way of meditation as a practice for ourselves.
